The spark: A podcast, a passion, and a plan
My journey to DrSallieTeachesNovelWriting.com began with a simple realization: new novelists have countless questions but often struggle to find clear, accessible answers. Having navigated the world of novel writing myself, I understand these challenges firsthand. My empathy for those going through these challenges inspired me to launch my podcast, also called DrSallieTeachesNovelWriting. My podcast is dedicated to presenting, free of charge, four comprehensive novel-writing courses. My goal is to provide aspiring writers with the bare basics of structuring a novel, along with the writing advice and information they need to craft the first draft of their first novel. Through my podcast and my blog, I am dedicated to guiding new or beginning novel writers every step of the way.

A unique perspective: Southern roots, literary wings
Born and raised in Mississippi, my unique "southern black woman" perspective deeply enriches my fiction. From a young age, I was a voracious reader of novels and stories written by black and by white writers. My writing and other artistic talents were recognized throughout my schooling. My education at historically Black institutions like Jackson State University, where I studied media communications, English, and Black history, further shaped my understanding of storytelling. My master's studies at the University of Illinois in advertising and literature expanded my horizons, all contributing to a distinct voice that helps to set my writing apart. Finally, by studying and achieving my doctorate through distance education/distance learning (Walden University), I learned and became inspired to achieve more by studying independently. This is what led me to research and study novel structuring and novel writing on my own, for ten years, which led me to write my non-fiction book, Bare Bones & Basics.

Authenticity in every word: Connecting with readers
I created my "Our history" page to forge a deeper connection with my podcast viewers and with readers of my books. By sharing my background and the experiences that influence my writing, I aim to demonstrate the high level of authenticity I bring to my fiction. By studying, understanding, appreciating, and honoring black American history and culture, I am able to envision and dream the cultural worlds of my fictional characters that I believe will connect, seamlessly, with my readers. It’s crucial for my audience to understand that my life experiences and the knowledge gained from them are woven into every story, ensuring that my work resonates with genuine insight and a unique voice. This transparency builds trust among my readership while also showcasing the distinct value, and the loud voice of truth, that I work to bring to my fiction .
